Delicious home-cooking for busy families


A well stocked store cupboard makes life so much easier when you are cooking every day.

The items on my shopping list are everyday items that I use time and again in many of my recipes – I don’t believe in buying ingredients to use once before it sits in the cupboard until it passes it’s use-by date!


  • Vegetable Oil  – This is perfect for frying at higher temperatures and is also used in muffins and some cakes.  Standard vegetable oil is usually rapeseed oil is cheap and perfect for frying at high temperatures.  If you have expensive rapeseed oil save it for drizzling over food or use in homemade dressings.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I only use this for dressings and dips – never cook with it as it burns too easily!

Tins & Jars

  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Tomato puree
  • Cannellini beans
  • Red kidney beans
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Black olives
  • Tinned tuna – I usually buy it in spring water

Condiments/Herbs & Spices

  • Sea salt – I use ‘Maldon’ or ‘Cornish Sea Salt’ for it’s lovely taste
  • Ground black pepper
  • Tomato ketchup
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mint sauce
  • Horseradish sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Dried rosemary
  • Dried thyme
  • Dried oregano
  • Smoked paprika
  • Curry powder – mild or medium depending on your taste
  • Harissa powder
  • Stock cubes or stock pots – Chicken, beef and vegetable


  • Plain flour
  • Self-raising flour
  • Baking powder
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Caster sugar
  • Demarara sugar – for use in crumbles
  • Soft brown muscovado sugar – lovely in cakes
  • Icing sugar
  • Golden syrup
  • Oats


  • Cornflour – great for thickening sauces and gravy
